Shirley Temple Ideal 16" 1934 "Prototype composition doll in Little Colonel outfit made by Catherine Kauffman. She has minimal crazing and some paint loss on her neck. She is strung a little loose but comes with a stand and can be posed with no trouble. Her outfit includes dress, apron, and pantaloons. Her face paint is lovely and all there. Her sleep eyes are tin and have all their lashes. She has her original shoes (she is missing one buckle) and socks.

Her original wig is very curly as you can see in the pictures. I have included an article to describe the early "prototype" Shirley Temple dolls with no markings. "The first Shirley Temple dolls were marketed in fall of 1934, at that time, "Stand Up and Cheer had just come out, and Shirley was just beginning to gain popularity. Because Ideal (the ONLY company licensed to sell the Shirley Temple doll) did not know how successful the dolls would be, the first dolls, the "prototype" doll, were not marked Shirley Temple, and were only marked on the inside of the head (C) 1934 Ideal Novelty and Toy Co. (also might be marked just Ideal on the head), by my own observation, these dolls had chubbier cheeks than the Shirley's made later in production, probably because Shirley was so young, and chubby herself.

These dolls are slightly more valuable that the later Shirley dolls. I have also included an article about Catherine Kauffman and her very fine reproduction Shirley outfits. Catherine Kauffman, of Danville, Pa. Is a self-taught seamstress who started sewing on a treadle sewing machine at age 14 out of economic necessity.

One of 16 children, Kauffmans mother died when Kauffman was only 11. The family couldnt afford extras such as dolls. As a teenager, Kauffman honed her sewing skills working in a pajama factory and later as a seamstress in a hospital laundry.

Sewing for dolls came much later after her daughter was born. Now Kauffman makes approximately 40 Shirley Temple outfits, creating patterns from pictures of the original costumes. Brigitte from France owns three outfits and is thrilled with the faithfully detailed reproduction Kauffman made for her composition Shirley Temple doll. She researches her fabrics and creates each one to the finest detail. Please let me know if you need additional pictures or have questions. I have several Shirley composition dolls listed now.
